National Hospice and Palliative Care Month

As many of you know November is Hospice and Palliative Care Month.  You probably saw the announcement from your organization or an email from NHPCO, SWHPN, AAHPM or HPNA and thought 'Well isn't that nice!'

And then you probably moved on with your day.

Well it is time to not be passive about this.  You now have an excuse to talk about hospice and palliative care to everyone you see all month long.  In a long elevator ride with no one talking? Perfect! You can just bust out with:
"Hey did you know November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month?  I wonder if when they were picking months they chose it because of Thanksgiving and getting together with family or maybe the symbolism of summer changing to winter? What do you think?"

And you can do more than talk offline, you can advocate right from your computer.  A few online advocates have setup a Facebook Fan Page for "National Hospice and Palliative Care Month."  We are an independent group and not affiliated with any one organization. (In fact the informal group organized organically from the weekly Hospice and Palliative Medicine Tweetchats.)  We just want more people talking about hospice and palliative care.

All this month we will be posting tips on how to support your local hospice or palliative care program, or how to support the regional and national organizations that help train professionals.  We will be running a Facebook ad campaign that right now has a budget of  $120. ($4 per day for 30 days).  If you are interested in contributing to this please email me at ctsinclair@gmail.com.  In less then 2 hours we already have 33 people clicking 'like.'  Our goal is to get to 10,000 by the end of the month.

We will also be having a Facebook and Twitter 'overlay' campaign were with a few quick clicks you can put a small symbol on your picture/avatar showing your support for hospice and palliative care.

If you have any ideas we should promote throughout the month to help the public advocate for hospice and palliative care please share them in the comments here or on Facebook.
