AAHPM Education Exchange - Call for Submissions

The call is out for next year's Educational Exchange at AAHPM 2011.  If you missed it last year, it was one of the best sessions I've been to in a while - a chance to witness and participate in some of the more innovative and interesting curricula in HPM education.

2011 Educational Exchange - Call for Submissions

Abstract Submissions are now being accepted for the 2011 Educational Exchange at the AAPHM and HPNA Annual Assembly February 16-19, 2011 in Vancouver, British Columbia. This session, “An Interactive Educational Exchange: Sharing Innovative Teaching Materials and Methods” was first presented at the Annual Assembly in Boston in 2010. It will provide a structured, interactive, and hands-on forum for palliative care educators from all disciplines to present, share and exchange materials and methods from model educational initiatives, including curricula, program development, educational process, assessment tools, online materials, and research in teaching and evaluation.  The Call for Submissions for the 2011 Educational Exchange will be open from June 16 through July 16, 2011.

Professionals and trainees involved in education from all palliative care disciplines are encouraged to submit. The educational innovation can be directed at a wide variety of learners, including trainees, colleagues, faculty, and interdisciplinary learners. Following submission, a panel of interdisciplinary, experienced palliative care educators will review the abstracts. Authors of selected abstracts will give a formal, 5 minute presentation at the Educational Exchange session in Vancouver.  All presenters will then breakout to individual stations to answer questions and provide an interactive, hands-on experience with their innovation specific materials for interested attendees.

Selected abstracts will be published as part of the Annual Assembly format in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management.

Submission Information
To submit an abstract, one should be a palliative care educator at the professional or trainee level (trainees are encouraged to submit with mentors). All disciplines are encouraged.  The abstract criteria are listed below.  Abstracts submitted to but not selected for the 2010 Educational Exchange may be resubmitted with updated data and content. At least one author should be prepared to attend the session at the TBA date and time in Vancouver, BC if the abstract is selected. Please see Submission Form for instructions. A Submission Example is also included for reference. All submissions should be emailed to by 5PM PT on July 16, 2011.

Abstract Review and Selection
This 60-minute session allows for a total of 5 abstracts to be selected and presented.  The Abstract Review Committee will evaluate the abstracts in blinded fashion and choose the 5 abstracts/innovations that best meet the criteria below.  If an abstract is selected, authors will need to confirm that at least one author will attend the Educational Exchange session and present the innovation. This presenter will need to register to attend the AAHPM/HPNA Annual Assembly for at least the day of the presentation.

Abstract Review Criteria:
The Abstract/Innovation should…
  • Highlight a specific educational innovation (curriculum, program development, educational process, assessment tool, online material, or research in teaching and evaluation)
  • Where relevant, have appropriately focused background, objectives, methods, results, discussion, and conclusion
  • Lend itself to a formal, 5 minute presentation. Time limit will be adhered to strictly.
  • Include materials that can be presented in an interactive, hands-on format (video demo on your laptop, pocket cards, pamphlets, handouts)
  • Have a competencies-based focus (especially if for a training setting). See list below.
  • Have potential for reproducibility in another setting
